Editor's Review:

As the name implies, Jwed.com is a dating website for Jewish men and women who are looking for a committed relationship. Its profiles are detailed, with a lot of focus on religious beliefs and practices, but there is also a community area where you can speak to a wider range of single people about any topic you like.

Signing up is easy although you are required to provide quite a lot of information, including a contact phone number. In fact you can’t progress without including this. We understand that this helps to prevent fake profiles but it does seem a little intrusive. Well, you don’t have to give a recent number, so there are ways around it, but it’s still a bit of a pain.

That aside, you can provide a wealth of information about yourself, including hobbies and habits. If Judaism is particularly important in your life then you’ll find plenty of like-minded people on this dating website, and the registration process requires that you outline your affiliations, lineage and more.

Profiles are relatively detailed but quite plain looking. You can upload multiple photos, and many people have done so. The quality of photos varies but they tend to be clear and attractive for the most part. As you browse you can see whether a member is online or how long it has been since they last logged into the site. This is handy as it means you can quickly eliminate members who never log on.

If you see someone you like, then you can send an icebreaker (a set phrase you choose from a list), say “shana tova!” or send an email message. Strangely there appear to be no instant chat options, so conversation is limited to the email style. This could certainly be improved as waiting for a response can really jar conversations.

There are a good range of search options to help you find who you’re looking for, although we’d like a few more options regarding hobbies and interests as this can also be very important. Still, you can be very specific when it comes to religious belief and practice, as well as choosing to search for a particular trait such as height.

When we logged on there were over 3000 recent logins, which is a good thing to see. However, we did find it a bit more difficult to find people who were actually online, but then again, since there’s no instant chat option, this isn’t necessarily a big deal. Once you’ve spoken to a few people, you may decide to add them to a favorites list, which will allow you to locate them easily in the future if you’d like to talk again.

Jwed offers competitive prices, although we think you can get better value for money elsewhere. The site is practical with regard to finding a suitable date and it has enough members for most appetites. However, we do feel that it lacks communication tools and doesn’t necessarily hold its ground in other areas when compared with its competitors.

That considered, why not sign up for free and take a look around? If you see someone you like then it’s sure to be worth the subscription fee to say hello. Are those wedding bells we hear?

JWed.com is an online dating service aimed at Jewish singles. The website, founded in 2001 followed a predecessor called Dosidate, launched in 1997.[1] Between 2001 and 2012 the site was called Frumster, a play on the term Frum and a joke by Rob Schneider.[1] The site, which offers a free and premium subscription, claimed to have a membership of over 30,000 and was the largest Orthodox Jewish online dating service in 2005. Between 2001 and 2005 it claimed to have matched 1222 members and announced its 500th wedding.[2][3]

In October 2012, Frumster.com changed its name to JWed.com. JWed launched in 2007 as a white-label site, and shared profile listings with Frumster.com until the name was completely changed 2012.[4]

The site had attracted criticism in 2004 for refusing profiles from people describing themselves as Conservative Jews.[5] The site is now open to all marriage-minded Jewish singles be they Orthodox observant or halachically Jewish singles.
